Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is fastest in Saturday's qualifying session for the Turkey Grand Prix, but Valtteri Bottas will begin the race on pole position.

Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas will start Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix on pole position after finishing second fastest in qualifying.

Having undertaken an engine change earlier in the week, Lewis Hamilton went into practice and qualifying knowing that he would serve a 10-place grid penalty.

That did not stop the defending world champion posting the quickest time on Saturday, an effort which will see him start in 11th spot on the grid.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton said: "The track is absolutely awesome with the grip level that it has given up now. It was a tricky session in general because there were still some damp patches and it was difficult to get the temperature into the tyres.

"Really great job by the team, getting us out at the right time. Tomorrow will be difficult, but I will give it everything."

Hamilton's title rival Max Verstappen finished in third place in his Red Bull, ensuring that he will start alongside Bottas on the front row.

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and AlphaTauri's Pierre Gasly will begin the race on the second row, while Great Britain's Lando Norris and George Russell will start in seventh and 12th respectively.
