Lewis Hamilton fights back to win Italian Grand Prix at Monza

Lewis Hamilton fights back from a poor start to win the Italian Grand Prix ahead of Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg.

Lewis Hamilton recovered from a slow start to win the Italian Grand Prix from Mercedes teammate and title rival Nico Rosberg this afternoon.

The English driver started the race on pole, but dropped back to fourth place after a stuttering start that saw Rosberg surge into top spot.

McLaren's Kevin Magnussen had a great start to go second, but ended the race in 10th place after finishing seventh and having to incur a five-second penalty.

The key moment in Hamilton and Rosberg's battle came on lap 29 when Rosberg overshot on the opening chicane, allowing Hamilton to get past his teammate.

Felipe Massa of Williams completed the podium for his first top-three finish of the season, while Ferrari's Fernando Alonso suffered a mechanical retirement for the first time since 2009.

Victory for Hamilton, his second at Monza, means that he now has 216 points with six races of the season left. Rosberg remains in first place with 238 - 22 ahead of Hamilton.
