Toto Wolff: 'Double points could overshadow a season'

Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff says that the championship battle could be undermined by the double points rule.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff has said that the double points rule could overshadow the title battle between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton leads the championship by 24 points after winning in America, but Rosberg could still win the title with the help of double points in the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, even if he finishes behind Hamilton in Brazil this weekend.

The rule was brought in to keep the championship battle alive at the end of the season, after Sebastian Vettel breezed to his fourth straight title last year.

Wolff told reporters: "I don't have a fear but I think the last race with the double points has the potential to overshadow a season. We know why the double points came and it made all the sense in the world - to make it spectacular for the audience, the fans and the viewers - but now we are in a situation that it could change the outcome."

Hamilton can finish second to Rosberg in both of the remaining races and still become world champion.
