Sir Jackie Stewart: 'Fernando Alonso to McLaren a good move'

Sir Jackie Stewart claims that Fernando Alonso's potential switch to McLaren will be a "good move".

Sir Jackie Stewart believes that Fernando Alonso's rumoured return to McLaren will be a "good move" for both the driver and the team.

The Spaniard, who will reportedly be unveiled by the Woking-based constructor in the coming weeks, originally joined McLaren in 2007, but endured an uneasy working relationship with team boss Ron Dennis.

However, Stewart claims that previous issues will not be a factor if the former world champion rejoins the Honda-powered outfit for 2015.

He told PTI: "First of all Honda must have had an influence in introducing Alonso to McLaren. Obviously they want a top line winner and Alonso certainly is that person. I think that is a good move for McLaren and him.

"I suspect he will have a say on who the number two driver will be. But that is not unusual for a number one driver. The same was the case when Michael Schumacher was at Ferrari.

"Jenson [Button] has been around for a long time and it is not impossible for them to look to the youth for future. On occasions Jenson was very fast this season but this is a team decision so let's see what they decide."

Alonso finished sixth in the 2014 drivers' championship.
