The McLaren man edged out the Red Bulls of Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber with a time of 1:13.188 at Interlagos.
Vettel headed Webber to second while Button's McLaren teammate Hamilton took fourth.
Fernando Alonso is the only man who can prevent Vettel claiming his third straight world title and he could only manage eighth-best.
Qualifying takes place later this afternoon, when expected rain showers could liven up proceedings.
