Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali says that it was the team's decision not to change Fernando Alonso's damaged front wing at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

Stefano Domenicali has confirmed that it was the team's decision not to pit Fernando Alonso after he sustained damage to his front wing at the Malaysian Grand Prix.

The Spaniard was left with a broken wing after running into the back of Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull on turn two during the opening lap.

The Ferrari team principal told reporters: "We took a risk that didn't pay off. After the touch, the race was not over and I considered the situation where there was a transition from wet to dry.

"In normal conditions you would come in, but in this transition, if you believe the wing can survive, you try and bide your time. Unfortunately, the wing didn't stay there.

"The decision was from the pitwall. Obviously Fernando can feel it in the car, but he could not see the damage from his view. We take the responsibility as the team."

The wing broke off after Alonso had passed the entrance to the pit lane, sending him into the gravel run-off area and ending his race.
