Wolverhampton Wanderers reportedly agree terms over a new long-term contract with forward Hwang Hee-chan.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly on the brink of announcing a new long-term contract for Hwang Hee-chan.

The West Midlands outfit initially signed the versatile attacker on a season-long loan deal from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2021.

However, there was an option in place to secure the South Korea international's services on a permanent basis for a fee in the region of £13m, a clause that Wolves activated.

Hwang failed to live up to his potential during his first two seasons at Molineux, chipping in with just eight goals and two assists from 57 outings in the Premier League.

In sharp contrast, and coincidentally, the 27-year-old has the same amount of goals and assists from just 16 top-flight appearances during the 2023-24 campaign.

Notably, each of those 10 contributions have come in separate matches, and there is a strong argument that Hwang deserves to be regarded as one of the players of the current Premier League season.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, he will now be rewarded with a new contract that includes a substantial wage increase.

Romano says that a two-year extension has been agreed, taking him to 2028, while Hwang will also become one of the highest-paid players at the club.

Confirmation of the deal is expected to be confirmed in due course and will be regarded as a major coup for Wolves given Hwang's profile in the Asian market.

Wolves had wanted to use that to their advantage last summer with a tour of South Korea, only for the pre-season trip having to be scrapped for reasons out of their control.

Hwang now has 18 goals and six assists from his 80 appearances in a Wolves shirt and may have received interest in his signature in January or the summer had an agreement not been reached.

Dependent on the funds that are made available to Gary O'Neil, Wolves may still target a new attacker in January, particularly who can be deployed down the centre.

That is despite Wolves scoring in 18 successive games in all competitions since they lost 1-0 at Manchester United in their opening Premier League fixture, a contest in which they had over 20 shots.
