Wigan risk losing Hugo Rodallega for nothing after new contract talks stalled.
The Colombian striker's current contract expires next summer and he would be eligible to leave for free if a new deal isn't signed.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez sees the 26-year-old as a key player in his team's bid to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
"It depends on when his agent is around," said Martinez. "But we have a very good relationship and Hugo has been focused on regaining his fitness and now he's fully-fit and excited to enjoy his football once more.
"The team is the most important thing and then all of the individual issues will be resolved. He's very important to us and he's still developing as a young man.
"We all know he's got the potential to play at any club in world football, so we need to enjoy him while he's with us."
Wigan are in action again Newcastle on Saturday.
