Dave Whelan: 'Arouna Kone will join Everton'

Chairman Dave Whelan says that Arouna Kone is leaving Wigan Athletic to join Premier League side Everton.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed that Arouna Kone is likely to follow Roberto Martinez to Everton within the next 24 hours.

Following four years at the helm, Martinez opted to leave the DW Stadium last month to replace David Moyes as the manager of the Toffees.

It now appears that he will take one of his former players with him in the form of Kone, who has a relegation clause in his contract worth £5m, according to Whelan, who has been talking to Sky Sports News this afternoon.

The striker joined Wigan last summer from Levante and went on to score 13 goals in all competitions.

Martinez is also reportedly keen to sign Wigan defender Antolin Alcaraz.
