Martyn Waghorn brace downs Besiktas

Martyn Waghorn scores twice to hand Wigan a 2-1 victory over Turkish side Besiktas in a pre-season clash at the DW Stadium.

Substitute Martyn Waghorn came off the bench to score twice and hand Wigan Athletic a 2-1 victory over Besiktas in a pre-season clash at the DW Stadium this evening.

The hosts made a bright start to the match but suffered an early blow when Marc-Antoine Fortune was forced off in just the seventh minute.

Waghorn came on to replace the striker, and it proved to be a blessing in disguise as the sub opened the scoring on the half-hour mark with a looping header from the centre of the box.

The lead lasted just three minutes, however, as Besiktas restored parity courtesy of Koybasi Ismail's curling free kick that went around the wall and beat Scott Carson.

The Latics were handed a glorious chance to move back into the lead just seven minutes after the restart when Callum McManaman was fouled by Atiba Hutchinson inside the area.

Waghorn stepped up for the home side and made no mistake, firing home from 12 yards for his second of the night.

Fellow substitute Ali Al-Habsi then provided another key moment at the other end as he kept out Mustafa Pektemek's header from point-blank range.

Besiktas failed to find the equaliser in the closing stages as last season's beaten FA Cup finalists held out for the win.
