Edimilson Fernandes keen to build on impressive West Ham United return

West Ham midfielder Edimilson Fernandes suggests that he was pleased to let out his frustration by impressing against Southampton after a long spell out through injury.

Midfielder Edimilson Fernandes has said that it was "a big pleasure" to help West Ham United to victory over Southampton at the weekend.

Fernandes had spent four months on the sidelines with an ankle injury but after being introduced as an early substitute at the London Stadium, the Swiss impressed as the Hammers ran out 3-0 winners.

The result ended a run of three straight defeats for West Ham, and Fernandes hopes that the club can build on the success when they make the short trip to Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The 21-year-old told the club's official website: "It was a good return for me and a good match for the whole team and I just hope we can continue like that.

"After four months, it was a big pleasure to return in a good match like that. It was class. I was just pleased to be back on the pitch. It was a good performance from the team and I feel strong, which I am happy about.

"It was difficult to be out for so long, physically and psychologically, not playing and not training on the pitch alongside my teammates, so that's why I was so eager to return and why it is so good to be back."

Fernandes has made a total of 42 appearances in all competitions since joining West Ham in August 2016.
