Former West Bromwich Albion defender Nicky Shorey has rejoined Reading on a one-year deal.

The 31-year-old was released by the Baggies at the end of last season after failing to gain a new deal, but he has returned to the club he left in 2008.

It is understood that the defender's contract involves the option of a further year depending on appearances.

Chairman Sir John Madejski told the club's official website: "I would like to welcome Nicky back to Reading Football Club, he was outstanding player here once before and we are looking forward to him triumphing even more this time around."

Shorey will travel with the Royals on their pre-season tour of Portugal later this month.
