Hodgson was locked in talks with the Football Association on Monday, when it is believed that he was offered the post, according to the Daily Star.
His reported salary will attract attention, however, with former England boss Fabio Capello understood to have earned upwards of £6m per year during his spell.
Hodgson could be announced as the new boss before the end of the week.
