Steve von Bergen ruled out of World Cup

Switzerland defender Steve von Bergen is sidelined for the rest of the World Cup after fracturing his eye socket against France.

Switzerland defender Steve von Bergen has been ruled out for the remainder of the World Cup after fracturing his eye socket against France.

The centre-back was accidentally kicked in the head by Olivier Giroud on Friday as the Swiss were beaten 5-2 in Salvador.

Having undergone tests in hospital, the Swiss Football Federation have concluded that Von Bergen should return home.

"He will be repatriated as soon as possible to Switzerland, accompanied by Dr Roland Grossen," read an official statement. "He will then be cared for by specialists."

Switzerland return to action on Wednesday when they take on Ecuador.
