Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson will play no part for England in the World Cup after undergoing surgery on a knee injury.
The Welsh club have been relegated from the Premier League, but Mawson impressed in the centre of the club's backline and earned a call-up to the Three Lions squad in March.
The 24-year-old did not get onto the pitch against either the Netherlands or Italy, but the former Barnsley man was still considered to have an outside chance of going to Russia.
However, Mawson will be forced to remain on the sidelines after having an operation on an issue which may have been partly due to his knee locking in the warm-up ahead of the FA Cup clash with Sheffield Wednesday in February.
As it stands, it is unclear whether Mawson will be ready to return for pre-season in July.
