Garry Monk: 'Gylfi Sigurdsson needs to add consistency to his game'

Swansea City manager Garry Monk insists that Gylfi Sigurdsson can orchestrate a move to a "bigger club" if he continues to improve his game.

Garry Monk has challenged midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson to continue improving his game at Swansea City, starting with today's clash against former club Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old returned to the Liberty Stadium in the summers following two seasons at Spurs, where he failed to make a significant impact.

Having refound his best form since making the move back to Wales, Monk has now backed his star creator to add consistency to his game in order to reach an elite level.

"Gylfi didn't have as much game time at Spurs as he wanted and you could see a little frustration in him," the Swans boss told reporters. "Once we knew he might be available we pursued that as strongly as possible because we knew what type of player we would be getting.

"He has come back a better player than before, he's at a good age and hopefully he will get even better. He can go as high in the game as he wants. The number one thing is his hard work, it's incredible what he puts in every single day and his quality comes on top of that.

"He's at a period in his career where he needs to settle, be here a while, enjoy his football and be more consistent. Then it will be a decision for him if he keeps getting better over a long period that he may get another chance to go to a bigger club."

Sigurdsson has scored twice while bagging a further eight assists to find himself behind only Chelsea's Cesc Fabregas for goals supplied in the Premier League this season.
