Jonjo Shelvey glad to answer critics

Jonjo Shelvey is happy to play the hero for a change after netting a late winner in Swansea's win over Southampton at St Mary's.

Swansea City midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has admitted his satisfaction over finally making headlines for the right reasons following his late winner against Southampton.

The 22-year-old struck an 83rd-minute wonder goal as Swansea edged out the in-form Saints 1-0 at St Mary's on Sunday evening.

Last month, Shelvey came in for some criticism from Garry Monk over his discipline, and did little to ease his manager's frustrations after picking up a four-game ban for elbowing Liverpool's Emre Can.

"My dad said to me before the game 'just make sure they're good headlines in the morning'," he told reporters.

"It's important for me personally to score a goal because I've had a lot of people criticising me and jumping on my back.

"I thought I was unlucky at Liverpool to get a four-game suspension, there was no intention there. But it is what it is. I'm just glad to be back on the pitch helping the team."

Shelvey's contribution helped the Swans to their first Premier League win since Boxing Day.
