Connor Wickham: 'We have proven we can beat the drop'

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham believes that his side have shown in recent weeks that they have the quality to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Sunderland striker Connor Wickham feels that his side have proven that they have the quality to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The 21-year-old scored a brace to hand Gus Poyet's side a crucial win over Cardiff City to move them out of the relegation zone with three games to play this season.

He told the club's official website: "It's a massive three points. The first goal was the most vital one of the game and I was in the right place at the right time to get something on it.

"It wasn't easy today, but we went out and did our jobs. Our performances over the last few weeks and again today have showed what we can do.

"We're creating chances, doing well and fighting and I think that showed today."

The Black Cats are 17th in the Premier League, but are only outside the drop zone on goal difference.
