Sunderland escape points deduction over Ji Dong-won debacle

Sunderland will not be docked points after admitting that they fielded an ineligible player in four league games.

Sunderland have been fined by the Premier League after admitting that they fielded an ineligible player in four league matches, but will not be docked any points.

An "administrative error" led to Ji Dong-won featuring for the Black Cats without international clearance, a mix-up that led to the departure of club secretary Liz Coley.

Ji also featured in Sunderland's victory over MK Dons in the Capital One Cup, a competition in which they went on to reach the final.

Sunderland later discovered the mistake and alerted the Premier League, who hit them with a financial penalty. The matter is now said to be closed, with no possibility of further sanctions.

Gus Poyet's side are currently in the Premier League relegation zone, four points adrift of safety.
