Dick Advocaat: 'Jermain Defoe volley should have counted for two goals'

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat jokingly claims that Jermain Defoe's match-winning strike in Easter Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby should have counted for two goals.

Sunderland manager Dick Advocaat has praised Jermain Defoe's match-winning strike in Sunday's Wear-Tyne derby, joking that it should have counted for two goals.

The veteran England man latched on to Steven Fletcher's headed flick-on on the stroke of half time to smash a volley into the Newcastle United net and ultimately give the Black Cats a 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light.

Advocaat told BBC Sport: "It was great, especially when you win the game. When we arrived on the bus we got a great feeling straight away.

"We pressurised them from the start and didn't give many chances away. It was such a nice goal it has to count for two!"

Sunderland climb to 15th in the Premier League table, three points above the drop zone and six points behind 13th-placed Newcastle.
