Stoke City chairman Peter Coates expects Qatar 2022 World Cup to be moved to winter

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates believes that it is "doable" to move the 2022 Qatar World Cup to winter.

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates believes that it is feasible to move the 2022 Qatar World Cup to winter.

The debate on whether to move the dates of the tournament has been rumbling on for some months due to the extreme heat in Qatar during the summer.

"It is doable," Coates told BBC Radio 5 live. "It is regrettable, but it is doable and I believe it will be done. I think it will be done because it isn't just for the Premier League, but for all of the other leagues.

"I think they will try and fit it in before or after Christmas, preferably after Christmas. I think there will have to be some compromise in English football, maybe things like for one season only, replays will go out of the FA Cup and other things like that so we can reduce the calendar a little bit."

FIFA representatives are meeting in Zurich today to discuss their options surrounding the 2022 World Cup.
