Chairman Lord Peter Snape hits out at some supporters of Stockport County.

The chairman of Stockport County has launched a staunch defence of the club's directors in the wake of criticism from some supporters.

Fans of the Edgeley Park-based outfit are said to have grown increasingly disgruntled by recent performances that have seen the team slip to 18th in the Blue Square Bet Premier Division.

What's more, some reports have claimed that the team is being picked by owner Spencer Fearn and not manager Darije Kalezic, as well as suggestions that Fearn has no real interest in the club.

However, amid plans to protest during the next home encounter, chairman Lord Peter Snape has blasted some of the supporters for the way that they have been treating club officials.

"While the football club board and club's employees fully understand the anger and frustration of many of our supporters and their disappointment with recent results, we are not prepared to accept the abuse, foul language and threatening behaviour aimed at the directors's box following the last home game," Snape said in a statement.

"When collectively we find it unsafe to bring our partners, children or grandchildren to home games because of this behaviour we are entitled surely to ask 'is it all worth it?' When some internet sites carry death threats against particular individuals, it certainly isn't.

"Let me make it quite clear. There is no consortium 'waiting in the wings' to take over from the existing board. Indeed, if the current board of directors walks away, there is no longer a football club called Stockport County. Those who dream of a 'Phoenix Club' will have to step up to the plate and put their plans into action. We will wish them all the best of luck and hope that their actions match their ambitions and bank balance."

Snape went on to warn potential protesters that they face being banned from matches if they cross a line.

"We understand from a so called 'supporters' website that there are plans to 'storm' the directors's box next Saturday if the result does not go our way. To prevent this criminal behaviour the club must pay for extra security precautions to ensure that those responsible face the consequences. The club will not hesitate to prosecute or ban anybody threatening or indulging in physical violence," he added.

"The board is grateful for the support and patience of the vast majority of our fans whose behaviour is exemplary and who, like us, want only the best for our club and its future."

Stockport's next encounter is a trip to Luton Town tomorrow night.
