Jermain Defoe not giving up on World Cup spot

Jermain Defoe is optimistic over the prospect of securing a place in England's World Cup squad after bagging a brace in his Toronto debut at the weekend.

The former Tottenham Hotspur marksman fired two first-half goals to give the Canadian outfit a 2-1 win away to Seattle Sounders.

As a result, the 31-year-old is hopeful that Three Lions boss Roy Hodgson will monitor his progress with the MLS outfit ahead of selecting his panel for the trip to Brazil in June.

"I think the most important thing for me is just to focus on playing here, winning games, and working hard for the team and obviously, trying to score goals," he told reporters.

"Obviously with the England thing, you know obviously it's gonna be at the back of my mind, but I'm sure if someone said to Roy Hodgson 'you know, if you haven't seen, Jermain scored two goals,' then maybe he won't be surprised."

Defoe has earned 55 caps at international level, scoring 19 times.
