Former Tottenham Hotspur player addresses Ange Postecoglou's future, as Daniel Levy contemplates sack

Sports Mole speaks to a former Tottenham Hotspur player about Ange Postecoglou's future, with the Australian boss under fire for his side's poor form.

Former Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Michel Vorm has exclusively told Sports Mole that sacking boss Ange Postecoglou would not address the fundamental issues that are holding the club back from success.

Spurs were beaten 2-1 by relegation-threatened Leicester City at home on Sunday afternoon, a result that left them in 15th place with just 24 points after 23 matchweeks.

Postecoglou's side are in the midst of an injury crisis, but fans and pundits have criticised the 59-year-old for refusing to adapt his tactical approach, with commentators such as Jamie Carragher arguing the team will not win a trophy unless they temper their aggressive style.

Vorm played for Spurs between 2014 and 2020, and when asked about whether dismissing Postecoglou would improve results, he told Sports Mole that the issues go beyond the head coach, saying: "I think it's big, if you just look at [the problems]. I left Tottenham in 2020 - obviously Mourinho's been there after Pochettino.

"Nuno was there and Conte, and it's been a bit up and down in general, so I think the problem is a bit deeper than only the players or a manager.

"Even if you would sack Postecoglou, what manager who comes in will change it overnight? I don't know, I don't have enough information to say what exactly is the problem, but it's deeper than just changing manager."

Vorm played under Mauricio Pochettino until November 2019, but the club have since appointed Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo, Antonio Conte and Postecoglou, with none of them bringing silverware to the club.

Postecoglou's positive impact on Tottenham Hotspur

When Postecoglou first arrived at Tottenham last season, he was praised for quickly implementing an attacking playstyle, with the team scoring 74 goals last term despite losing striker Harry Kane to Bayern Munich before the beginning of the campaign.

Spurs have found the back of the net 46 times in the Premier League in 2024-25 and are on track to score 76, the most since they netted 86 goals in 2016-17.

Vorm was keen to remind Tottenham fans that Postecoglou has made positive changes as boss, adding: "People tend to forget quick when things go bad - people enjoyed a lot of games that Tottenham was playing under Ange as well, you can't deny that. The style of play is enthusiastic to watch."

It should also be noted that captain Son Heung-min is now 32 and has struggled more as he has aged, but Postecoglou has still managed to get the most out of the other attacking players at his disposal.

Will Tottenham improve when their injured stars return?

Tottenham have fewer points this season than they accumulated after 10 matchweeks in 2023-24, with injuries to several players derailing the squad's ambitions.

Nine players missed Spurs' defeat against Leicester, including centre-backs Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, as well as forwards Brennan Johnson, Dominic Solanke and Timo Werner.

Vorm is confident that Tottenham's fortunes would improve when their injured stars return to action but thinks that fans should temper their expectations until then.

"If you don't have the players - who are not available or injured - I think that you need to be a bit more realistic with the squad you have, but I still think, even if everyone's fit, you still have an amazing squad, and they showed [that in the past]," he added.

Tottenham could have the chance to reach the EFL Cup final should they hold onto their one-goal advantage over Liverpool in the second leg of their semi-final clash on February 6, and there is every chance that their squad will be much healthier by the time the final is played in March, but it remains to be seen if Postecoglou will be in the dugout.
