Nikica Jelavic could have put Hull ahead after nine minutes, but he was wasteful after spooning his effort over the crossbar from the centre of the box.

Spurs responded through Emmanuel Adebayor, who unleashed a devastating shot from the edge of the box that looked headed for the top corner, but Steve Harper did well to get across and tip the ball away.

The save was to prove important as it allowed Long to put his side in front down at the other end, with Hull's new signing converting neatly from the centre of the box.

Tim Sherwood's men tried to claw their way back into the game as Aaron Lennon saw a right-footed shot from the centre of the box blocked by the Tigers' defence, leaving the visitors to go into the break 1-0 down.

Spurs pulled level after the break when Paulinho picked up Danny Rose's pass before crashing the ball home into the centre of the net.

The visitors had Michael Dawson to thank as he produced a great piece of defending to keep out Jelavic's header, which had already evaded Hugo Lloris as it moved towards goal.

Jan Vertonghen had a chance to win it late on, but the defender sent his left-footed shot wide having been picked out by Christian Eriksen from a free kick.

Tom Huddlestone sent a perfect delivery into the box in the final stages following a set-piece situation, but the ball evaded every Hull player as Tottenham hung on for a point away from home.
