Wayne Rooney: 'Harry Kane could leave Tottenham if trophy drought continues'

Wayne Rooney warns Tottenham Hotspur that Harry Kane will leave the club if they do not win trophies in the next couple of seasons.

Everton forward Wayne Rooney has warned Tottenham Hotspur that they will lose their talisman Harry Kane if the club do not start picking up silverware.

The England international had a stellar 2017 by ending the calendar year as Europe's highest goalscorer (56) for club and country.

This season, the 24-year-old leads the way for the Golden Boot having hit 22 strikes, and he nabbed his 100th Premier League goal in Sunday's dramatic 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield.

Amid reports that Real Madrid are sniffing around the striker, Rooney believes that it could be a matter of time before Kane's head is turned.

"Kane's motivation is going to change from goals to trophies, and if Tottenham don't win trophies in the next few years, he is going to want to move elsewhere," the former Manchester United captain said on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football.

"That is a decision he is going to have to make in the next year or two, but Tottenham have also got to make a decision – bring more players in and have a real push to win the Premier League."

Kane, who came through Spurs' youth ranks in 2009, is yet to win a piece of silverware at the North London outfit.
