Mido: 'I put on 50kg in a year'

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough forward Mido says that he put on 50kg in weight during one year before changing his lifestyle.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and Middlesbrough forward Mido has spoken out about issues with his weight, revealing that he once put on 50kg in a year.

Mido enjoyed a 12-year playing career representing a number of top European clubs, with his most notable period coming at Spurs between January 2005 and August 2007.

However, the former Egypt international struggled with weight problems during the second half of his career, which eventually contributed to the end of his playing days.

Mido has claimed that he had reached 151kg during the period after his retirement, but he has now revealed that he has worked with a fitness and mental coach in order to bring his weight down.

The 35-year-old told Sky Sports News: "I've had a really bad couple of years putting on weight and it is the worst thing which can happen to a sportsman. I put on 50 kilos in one year. I have worked so hard to try to lose weight. I am happy with the way that things have been going.

"I have used a team to lose weight. I have used a fitness coach and a mental coach because it is not easy. I think that being over-weight is one of the worst things that can happen to you. I could not walk 100 yards. I was 151 kilos and today I am 100 kilos. I am very happy.

"I would advise everyone to watch their weight because when you are your ideal weight, you can enjoy a better life. Now I enjoy playing with my kids, I swim everyday and six months ago, I couldn't do that."

Mido has held managerial positions in his homeland since announcing his retirement in 2013.
