Jermain Defoe leaves the England Euro 2012 squad after hearing of his father's death but the FA confirm that the striker will return to Poland.

Jermain Defoe has dropped out of the England Euro 2012 squad following the death of his father but is due to return to the Three Lions camp in Poland.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker flew home to the United Kingdom this morning after hearing the news of the death of his father, who passed away over night.

The Football Association released a statement, which said: "Jermain will re-join the England Euro squad in due course. There will be no replacement player called in.

"We would ask all media to respect Jermain and his family's privacy at this difficult time."

England go up against France for their first group fixture of the Euros on Monday but if Defoe remains absent for the clash, Danny Welbeck and Andy Carroll will be the only strikers available for manager Roy Hodgson.
