Julen Lopetegui pleased with Spain performance

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui pays tribute to his players following Friday's 1-1 draw with Germany in Dusseldorf.

Spain boss Julen Lopetegui has paid tribute to his players following Friday's 1-1 draw with Germany in Dusseldorf.

Valencia forward Rodrigo sent Spain ahead in the sixth minute of the international friendly, before Thomas Muller equalised for the world champions in the latter stages of the first period.

Both teams had chances to win it in the second half, but the spoils were shared as the pair continued their preparations for the 2018 World Cup with an entertaining draw.

Lopetegui has said that facing Germany at this stage will stand his team in good stead ahead of Russia.

"We leave here with very good feelings. We played against the world champions, who were very motivated. We had a good match, with chances to win it, although they also had chances of their own," Lopetegui told reporters.

"Trying to dominate here for 90 is complex, but we played with ambition. Germany are quicker and physically stronger than us. They're more comfortable than us during transitions. We played with pace and profundity in the opening 30 minutes and avoided their transitions.

"However, they had their moment and were able to run at us. When they're able to run, they're more dangerous. We had chances to score the second goal, but it was a nice and open match for spectators, each team had their own style and had good players. It was a good show.

"I'm happy with the performance of the whole team, although there were things that were more positive than others in the match. Playing against the best teams in the world is a very nice challenge, and we took it as such. We played our game with confidence."

Next up for Spain is an international friendly against Argentina on Tuesday night.
