Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has revealed that he selected Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno in his latest squad because he wants to see the defender "up close".

Moreno earned his first national call-up in over three years after his upturn in form for the Reds this season, during which the 25-year-old has started for Jurgen Klopp's side in the Premier League and the Champions League.

The Spaniard was criticised last term after failing to impress as Liverpool's first-choice left-back, with Klopp bringing in former Hull City defender Andy Robertson in the summer transfer window as a potential replacement.

"Alberto Moreno? He's a starter for Liverpool," Lopetegui told reporters. "He's always playing and I know him very well from youth categories.

"Now I want to see him up close. We don't judge only on what we see in the Champions League. We see each player in their surroundings, domestic league and everything they play for."

Moreno, who has cemented his place in the Liverpool squad this season, featured in the Reds' 4-1 win over West Ham United on Saturday.
