International matches: Premier League roundup

Sports Mole reviews how the Premier League's foreign players fared during last night's round of international matches.

The large presence of foreign footballers in the Premier League meant that a host of them were in action for their respective international sides across the globe last night.

Omitting the home nations, Sports Mole has reviewed which England-based players made the headlines.

Arsenal

He may not be first choice at the Emirates Stadium, but Nicklas Bendtner scored both of Denmark's goals during their 2-2 draw with Italy. Also on target was Mesut Ozil, who scored late on as Germany recorded a 3-0 victory over the Republic of Ireland in Cologne. Incidentally, it was the playmaker's 50th cap for the Germans. Not to be outdone by Bendtner, Olivier Giroud bagged a brace in France's 6-0 friendly win over Australia.

Chelsea

Andre Schurrle may have flitted in and out of the Chelsea starting lineup so far this season, but he proved his worth at international level by scoring for Germany in the 3-0 victory against the Irish.

Everton

Chelsea supporters may want to avert their eyes as Romelu Lukaku, who has been loaned out by the West Londoners to Everton for the season, added to his campaign's tally with both goals in Belgium's 2-1 victory over Croatia, which sealed World Cup qualification for the Red Devils. Elsewhere, Seamus Coleman was made the Republic of Ireland captain on his 25th appearance against Germany.

Manchester City

Alvaro Negredo came off the bench to net the winner for Spain against Belarus, which has left Vicente del Bosque's side on the cusp of World Cup qualification. His City striker partner, Edin Dzeko, was also in good form as he hit a brace for Bosnia-Herzegovina against Liechtenstein. Injury prevented Vincent Kompany from turning out for Belgium, but it did not stop him celebrating their win over Croatia.

Manchester United

It was a memorable night for Robin van Persie, who became Holland's leading goalscorer of all time when he struck a hat-trick in their 8-1 thrashing of Hungary. The frontman now has 41 goals to his name on the international scene. Javier Hernandez and Antonio Valencia also recorded assists in wins for Mexico and Ecuador respectively.

Newcastle United

The Magpies have a host of French players in their squad and two of them found the net during Les Bleus' 6-0 win over Australia. Midfielder Yohan Cabaye scored the fourth of the night, before full-back Mathieu Debuchy volleyed in shortly after the restart.

Norwich City

There was an unlikely scorer for Sweden during their 2-1 win over Austria as Norwich full-back Martin Olsson converted a pass from Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The result sealed the Swede's place in the playoffs.

Southampton

Pablo Osvaldo has found goals hard to come by since his record move to the South Coast during the summer, but he made no mistake for Italy in Denmark. His strike put the away side in front, but the match eventually ended with two goals apiece.

Swansea City

It was a big night for Michu, who was handed his debut during Spain's 2-1 win over Belarus in Mallorca. The Swansea City attacker played as a lone frontman, but as the club's official website states he "saw very little of the ball as Belarus put 10 men behind the ball." He was replaced with 60 minutes on the clock by Negredo.

Tottenham Hotspur

Gylfi Sigurdsson took his positive Premier League form of late into the international break with a goal in Iceland's 2-0 win over Cyprus. Meanwhile, defender Vlad Chiriches won a penalty for Romania during their 4-0 success at the expense of Andorra.
