Erwin Koeman: 'Wasted chances cost Southampton victory'

Erwin Koeman laments Southampton's lack of coolness in front of goal, which he believes cost his side maximum points away at Newcastle United.

Southampton assistant manager Erwin Koeman has admitted to having "mixed feelings" over his side's 2-2 draw against Newcastle United.

The Saints rescued a point late on at St James' Park thanks to Shane Long's headed goal.

Graziano Pelle had earlier given the visiting side the lead, before Papiss Cisse and debutant Georginio Wijnaldum turned the contest on its head.

Despite seeing his side earn a share of the spoils, Koeman - standing in for injured brother Ronald - claimed that Southampton perhaps should have taken maximum points.

"I have mixed feelings," the Dutchman told Sky Sports News. "If you see the last 10 minutes I think we have to win. [There were] big, big chances for Sadio Mane and he doesn't hit the target, but until the end we showed we were fit.

"He made brilliant moves but finally it's about making goals, he should have scored a goal with one of the two and you win 3-2, but that's football.

"We played well. If you see the last 10 minutes we did very well, created a lot of chances to win but, one point, and mixed feelings. For Shane it was very nice, he was ill this week and I was glad for him that he made a fantastic goal. We came back very strongly."

Southampton return to action next weekend when they play host to Everton.
