Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has hinted that Jay Rodriguez may not play again this season.
Rodriguez has not appeared for the Saints since damaging his cruciate ligament in April, before Koeman had arrived at the club as Mauricio Pochettino's replacement.
The England international was initially expected to return to action in January, but Koeman has revealed that the club have not set a date for his comeback.
"He's a very good player but we don't put pressure on him," the Southampton boss told reporters. "He has to be fully fit. If that's at the end of the season then I'm pleased, but if not then next season.
"For me the fitness of the player is more important than the position in the table."
Rodriguez was Southampton's top scorer last season with 17 goals in all competitions.
