Aiden McGeady: 'Republic of Ireland job a poisoned chalice'

Republic of Ireland manager Aiden McGeady thinks that the manager's job is a "poisoned chalice", a role that will always draw criticism to some degree.

Republic of Ireland winger Aiden McGeady has declared that the new national boss will be criticised no matter what style of play he chooses to implement.

The Irish sacked Giovanni Trapattoni last month after their chances of qualifying for next summer's World Cup evaporated, leaving youth coach Noel King to take temporary charge of the senior side.

McGeady thinks that the Ireland job is a "poisoned chalice", insisting that either results or performances will always be criticised to some degree.

He told The Sun: "You can never really win. It's a bit of a poisoned chalice, the manager's job, same as in England.

"If you do well, you are still going to have people saying, 'That's wrong'. You can't please everyone."

Ireland finish their Group C campaign tonight with a home qualifier against Kazakhstan.
