Cristiano Ronaldo double fires Real Madrid to European Super Cup crown

Cristiano Ronaldo's double is enough for Real Madrid to win the 2014 European Super Cup against Sevilla at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Real Madrid have won their first European Super Cup since 2002 by defeating Sevilla 2-0 at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The match in South Wales pitted together the winners of the Champions League and the Europa League, with Cristiano Ronaldo's double separating the two Spanish sides on the night.

It took until the 19-minute mark before the first real chance of the contest, with summer recruit James Rodriguez picking out Gareth Bale, but the Welshman could not get the better of Beto from close range.

Just two minutes later Sevilla themselves came close to opening the scoring through Vitolo's low effort, which Iker Casillas did well to keep out.

Ronaldo collected a pass from Karim Benzema moments later before getting a shot away at goal, yet Beto was once more on hand to keep the effort out.

Los Bloncos did make the breakthrough with 31 minutes on the clock, however, and it was Ronaldo who found the net after converting Bale's inch-perfect cross to the back post.

Daniel Carrico managed to get on the end of a loose ball inside the Madrid box, only for his attempt to be hit straight at Casillas who kept the strike out, ensuring that Carlo Ancelotti's men held a slender lead at the interval.

It took less than five minutes of the second half before Madrid doubled their advantage, and it was Ronaldo once more who found the target with a thumping effort into the back of the net following a driving run.

Sevilla were in desperate need of a goal, yet it was Los Blancos who came closest to finding a third of the night through Benzema who was denied yet again by Beto with his long-range drive.

Ronaldo nearly rounded off his night with a hat-trick in the closing minutes, only to be denied by Alvaro Navarro who intercepted the ball at the vital moment after Bale slid the Portuguese in.
