Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both made it five wins from five matches this weekend, but Sevilla remain rooted to the bottom of the table following defeat to Valencia on Sunday.
Week five's action began on Friday evening as Osasuna, who were bottom of the table having failed to record a single point, overcame newly-promoted Elche 2-1 in Pamplona.
Real Sociedad continued their stuttering start to the season with a goalless draw against Malaga in Saturday's early start, before Almeria moved onto three points for the season with a 2-2 draw against Levante.
League champions Barcelona travelled to the Spanish capital to face Rayo Vallecano in the penultimate match on Saturday, with Pedro scoring three times in a comprehensive 4-0 win. However, Atletico Madrid kept pace at the top of the division with a 2-0 win over Real Valladolid.
Sunday's opening two matches both ended in goalless draws with Real Betis sharing the points with Granada, before Celta Vigo held Villarreal to a stalemate in Vigo. Real Madrid then made it four wins from five matches in the penultimate fixture of the evening with a 4-1 win over Getafe.
It had been suggested that Valencia boss Miroslav Djukic's position would have been in doubt if his side did not overcome Sevilla at the Mestalla on Sunday, but Jonas scored twice in a 3-1 win, leaving the away side bottom of the division having failed to secure a win this season.
Espanyol welcomed Athletic Bilbao on Monday looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season and that indeed remained the case following the fixture with Victor Sanchez hitting a brace in a 3-2 win over the Basque outfit.

Yoel (Celta Vigo)
Celta have lost just once this season, with their goalkeeper one of the main reasons for their positive start. The 25-year-old was again in fine form this weekend in the goalless draw against Villarreal. It was not a match full of clear chances, but the Spaniard was forced into a number of smart stops in the latter stages, while he was aerially dominant and composed in possession.
Martin Montoya (Barcelona)
It has been a difficult season for the right-back, who has been forced to play second fiddle to Dani Alves at Barcelona. His contract is up at the end of the season, but that did not distract him as he put in a fine performance in the 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Saturday. Not only was the Spaniard solid in defence, he was also ever available in advanced positions.
Pape Diakhate (Granada)
Granada's goalless draw with Real Betis on Sunday was hardly a classic, but both defences must be praised for their contribution. Undoubtedly the star of the show was Diakhate, who was a rock in the heart of the away side's defence throughout the 90 minutes. The 29-year-old also demonstrated his underrated ability in possession as he kept it simple in the latter stages.
Dani Carvajal (Real Madrid)
Carvajal continued his impressive start to his Real Madrid career with a fine performance in his side's 4-1 win over Getafe at the weekend. His attacking talents have been shown during the early part of the campaign, but he also demonstrated his ability to defend this weekend. At just 21, he is one of the most exciting youngsters in world football.
Victor Sanchez (Espanyol)
The 26-year-old was among the goals on Monday evening as he scored twice in his side's 3-2 win over Athletic Bilbao. The first was an absolute corker, while the second was a demonstration of how to control a low strike into the bottom corner. Aside from his brace, the Spaniard was intelligent in possession and always available.
Pape Diop (Levante)
Diop will have to battle it out with Victor Sanchez for goal of the weekend, with the midfielder thumping a cracking effort into the bottom corner in his side's 2-2 draw with Almeria on Saturday. The 27-year-old was the bright spark in what was an under-par first half of football, before he utterly dominated the midfield area in the second 45 minutes.
Isco (Real Madrid)
The Spaniard scored his fifth goal of the season in his side's 4-1 win over Getafe on Saturday. The former Malaga midfielder had been pencilled in for a spot on the bench, but was introduced into the starting XI when Gareth Bale pulled out in the warm-up. He did not disappoint with a curling effort capping an all-round midfield performance.
Federico Cartabia (Valencia)
'Fede', who came through the Valencia youth system, burst onto the scene this weekend with a fine display in the club's 3-1 win over Sevilla. He will certainly frustrate this season, but at the age of 21, has the time to develop into an exciting winger. He assisted Jonas for the Brazilian's first of the evening, while he caused havoc with his direct running, especially in the second period.
Pedro (Barcelona)
The Spaniard has been forced to share the right-wing duties at Barcelona with Alexis Sanchez this season, but he put down a marker with three goals in their 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. In truth, it could have been more with Pedro simply too hot to handle for the capital outfit. He scored just seven times in the league last season, but already has five this time around.
Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid)
Ronaldo moved onto four league goals for the season with a double in the club's 4-1 win over Getafe at the weekend. The first of which came from the spot after 34 minutes, but his second was a wonderful piece of skill as he flicked a low effort into the bottom corner in second-half stoppage time. Bale might have arrived this summer, but the Portuguese is still the main man.
Jonas (Valencia)
If ever Valencia needed Jonas to perform it was this weekend. The Brazilian indeed answered the call as he struck twice in their 3-1 win over Sevilla on Sunday. He managed 13 goals in the league last season, but will be asked to better that total this time around with the loss of Roberto Soldado. Double figures are certainly not beyond the talented 29-year-old.
