Rangers confirm that former manager Walter Smith is named the club's non-executive chairman.

Rangers have confirmed that former manager Walter Smith has been appointed as the club's new non-executive chairman.

The 65-year-old, who took charge of the club for a combined 11 years, was expected to be given the role following a board meeting last night.

A statement on the club's official website said: "Walter Smith is widely acknowledged as the club's most successful manager. Under his leadership, the club enjoyed two immensely productive spells and he is one of the most highly regarded figures in British football.

"The board believes that the new chairman will bring stability, experience and a wealth of knowledge to the club."

Smith will take the place of Malcolm Murray, who has been removed by the board.
