Rangers chief executive Charles Green believes that the club should be promoted to the next tier of Scottish football regardless of whether a new league system is introduced this summer.

Rangers chief executive Charles Green has called for the club to be promoted regardless of whether a new league structure is introduced this summer.

Rangers look set to cruise to the Scottish Third Division title this season, but their chances of moving up to the next tier are under threat from a proposed 12-12-18 league set-up.

The new system would see Rangers remain in the lowest league in Scottish football, something that Green believes would be unfair on the fallen giants.

"All things being well, Rangers should win the Division Three title and, that being the case, we should be promoted. That should happen regardless of what league structure the powers that be put in place," said Green.

"It would be manifestly wrong to deny any team promotion having won the competition they have entered into at the start of the season. Equally, teams which have been relegated should not benefit unfairly from any a restructuring of leagues.

"The principle of promotion and relegation for the clubs which fall into these categories at the end of this season should be enshrined in any new league set-up. So, if, as widely predicted, we end up with a 12-12-18 set-up, Rangers should be promoted and this promotion should be to the middle tier."

Rangers currently sit 20 points clear of their nearest rivals at the top of the Scottish Third Division.
