Richard Caborn: 'We should look at Bundesliga'

Former sports minister Richard Caborn says that the Premier League must look at the Bundesliga as a perfect example of sport and business working together.

Former sports minister Richard Caborn has said that England must look at the Bundesliga as an example of how sport and business can function together.

Caborn, who served as minister for sport from 2001 to 2007, has pointed to the example of Germany, where he believes that both the national team and the Bundesliga are reaping the rewards of a successful financial model.

"Germany is a classic example of football being considered a sport rather than a business", Caborn told SportsDirect News. "Over there the national team is sacrosanct, there's the principal of 49% ownership and there is an encouragement to develop indigenous players and coaches.

"Some would argue there is nothing wrong with football and that the Premier League is in great health, but I would question the dominance of the Premier League and ask - is it being run for the right reasons?

"Do you only accept the Premier League as a business model or do you say, actually, the values of the sport are more important - for the cultural and general well-being of the nation, and the health of our national team."

Bayern Munich beat their Bundesliga rivals 2-1 in this season's Champions League final.
