Diego Maradona is close to becoming the next coach of the Iraq national team.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona has emerged a frontrunner to coach the Iraq national team.

The football great has accepted the job in principle and will meet with the Iraqi Football Federation on Friday to discuss financial terms, according to a representative of World XI, who handles his affairs.

"We received the offer and contacted Diego, who accepted it. The executive committee of the Iraqi Football Federation is to meet on Friday to confirm the financial terms of the deal," said World XI's Hernan Tofoni.

Maradona, who won the World Cup with Argentina as a player in 1986, coached the national team 2010 World Cup in South Africa, leading them to the quarter-finals.

Iraq have been seeking a new manager since last month when Brazilian coach Zico stepped down, claiming that the country's Football Association had breached the terms of his contract.

The country lie third in their World Cup 2014 qualifying group, behind Japan and Australia.
