Ayoze Perez: 'Something must change at Newcastle United'

Newcastle striker Ayoze Perez insists that the players "have to" remain behind under-fire boss Steve McClaren, but admits that something needs to change at the club.

Newcastle United striker Ayoze Perez has admitted that "something has to change" at the club if they are to avoid relegation from the Premier League this season.

The Magpies slumped to a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of fellow relegation candidates Bournemouth on Saturday to leave them 19th in the table and with just three points from the last 18 on offer.

Newcastle have reportedly undergone "crisis talks" over the future of manager Steve McClaren as a result, but Perez believes that it is down to the players to become more of a team.

"In some moments we are not a team, we are not as one. Something has to change. It's not enough - we have good quality in the dressing room, but during this season we have not shown it. We need to be a team. We have been playing good football at home - winning games," Perez told BBC Newcastle.

"That has been key for us - playing at home. I don't know what happened but we have to change something. We have to think that we have 10 finals. It doesn't matter how, we have to be a team and try to get points as soon as possible because we are in trouble.

"It's our turn, we have to give [the fans] something special because Newcastle, the club, and the fans don't deserve the situation. [McClaren] is our manager, we have to be with him. If something changes, I don't know what's going to happen - but right now we are with him because he is our manager."

Newcastle's next match sees them come up against league leaders Leicester City on Monday, March 14.
