Alan Shearer calls for Alan Pardew resignation

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer calls on Alan Pardew to resign from his post after the manager headbutted Hull City's David Meyler on Saturday.

Alan Shearer has called on Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew to resign from his post after the manager headbutted Hull City's David Meyler on Saturday.

Pardew was sent off during the Magpies' 4-1 win at the KC Stadium in the Premier League for appearing to nudge his head into the face of the 24-year-old following a touchline row.

The 52-year-old was quick to apologise for the incident before being handed a £100,000 fine by his club's hierarchy, but Newcastle legend Shearer believes that the punishment should extend beyond financial sanctions.

"What on earth can Alan Pardew say to his players when they misbehave? I have never seen anything like that before, ever," he told the Daily Mail.

"Frankly I wouldn't be surprised, and I don't think anybody will be surprised at all, if Alan were to resign over this.

"Even if he doesn't want to resign, the club might be saying to him, 'We might be doing you a favour — you resign rather than us sack you', because that will have to be in his thinking also."

Pardew could also face action from the Football Association after chairman Greg Dyke confirmed that the FA will investigate the matter.
