Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew believes that midfielder Cheik Tiote is nearing his best form after an impressive performance against Leeds United on Wednesday.
Tiote starred as the Magpies secured their place in the next round with a 2-0 victory, and Pardew is hopeful that the Ivory Coast international can contribute to an improved Premier League display this season.
The 52-year-old told reporters: "He was back to near his best. He was a lot more comfortable in possession than last year. He looks more like himself and I am hoping for a big season from Cheik.
"I didn't think last year went well for Cheik in terms of the player he is, and that coincided with the team. When he's at his best, I think we are at our best."
The 27-year-old has seen the start of his season hampered by a calf injury.
