Newcastle United head coach Steve McClaren is reportedly looking to add former Valencia assistant Ian Cathro to his coaching staff.
The 28-year-old Scotsman is out of work after leaving the Spanish side earlier this month, having helped them to finish fourth in La Liga last term.
McClaren is said to be keen to have his backroom team in place soon, having been rebuffed by Boudewijn Zenden and Steve Round.
Cathro had a brief playing career in the Scottish lower leagues with Forfar Athletic and Brechin City prior to becoming the head of Dundee United's youth academy at the age of just 22.
He became the assistant manager of Portuguese side Rio Ave in 2012 under Nuno, before following him to Valencia last summer.
McClaren is now keen to bring Cathro to St James' Park, according to the Northern Echo.
Cathro has also worked for the Scottish Football Association's regional coaching set-up in the past.
