John Carver to be given Newcastle United chance?

Newcastle United will give head coach John Carver an opportunity to impress the board before appointing a new boss ahead of next season, according to a report.

John Carver is reportedly still in the frame to become Newcastle United head coach on a permanent basis.

The 50-year-old was appointed Newcastle boss for the rest of the campaign in January, following Alan Pardew's departure to Crystal Palace.

Newcastle managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr held informal discussions with a number of possible candidates prior to Carver's appointment, which included former Lyon boss Remi Garde.

Despite Newcastle winning just twice since Pardew's departure, it appears that Carver is in pole position to be in charge when the new season begins in August.

According to the Shields Gazette, Charnley, who is tasked with the appointment of Newcastle's next boss, will wait to see how Carver gets on before deciding whether to revisit any former targets.

Newcastle are currently 12th in the Premier League table.
