Jamie Carragher slams Tim Krul over Jermain Defoe banter

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher berates Tim Krul for congratulating Jermain Defoe for his wondergoal that helped Sunderland clinch the bragging rights over Newcastle.

Jamie Carragher has said that Tim Krul's half-time banter with Jermain Defoe was unacceptable in Sunderland's derby-day win over Newcastle United.

Defoe crashed a thunderous volley past Krul shortly before the break as the Black Cats secured the bragging rights with a 1-0 win from the North-East derby.

The Dutchman was seen laughing and joking with Defoe in the tunnel at the Stadium of Light during the break in a gesture that may rile Newcastle fans due to the rivalry.

Krul played down the incident afterwards, but Liverpool legend Carragher failed to see the lighthearted side given the occasion.

"Somebody out there who doesn't care about football might say it is good sportsmanship but when Everton played Liverpool, I certainly wouldn't be shaking the hand of an Everton player," he told Sky Sports News.

"He is actually waiting for him [Defoe] in the tunnel, he is smiling. Whenever you play a derby game you don't just play on the day, there's a build-up in the week before. Everybody is on edge and you work yourself up into a frenzy.

"You can't have that in any game, but in a derby game...you don't smile, you don't laugh about it."

United manager John Carver slammed his side's "abysmal" performance after the game.
