Rafael Benitez 'to walk away from Newcastle United'

Newcastle United manager Rafael Benitez is reportedly close to quitting due to the club's lack of transfer activity this summer.

Rafael Benitez is reportedly on the brink of quitting Newcastle United after being left upset by his side's lack of transfer business on deadline day.

The 57-year-old has made no secret of the fact that he wanted more players this summer, being restricted to around just £40m of sales since earning promotion from the Championship.

Benitez was said to be confident of at least bringing in a couple more faces in the final days of the window, though, including Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs and Southampton youngster Matt Targett.

It is claimed by football correspondent John Richardson that the Spaniard is "disgusted" by his lack of financial support, leaving his position untenable at St James' Park.

Benitez is also said to have been keen to offload Aleksandar Mitrovic and bring in a replacement striker, which the board again disagreed with.
