Ronald de Boer: 'Guus Hiddink was wrong choice'

Ronald de Boer says that Guus Hiddink should not have succeeded Louis van Gaal as Netherlands coach last summer.

Former Netherlands international Ronald de Boer has suggested that Guus Hiddink should never have been given the national team job.

The 68-year-old has resigned less than a year after succeeding Louis van Gaal, following the Oranje's poor start to Euro 2016 qualifying.

De Boer believes that Southampton boss Ronald Koeman should have taken charge last summer instead of Hiddink.

"The KNVB is just as guilty as Hiddink in this situation," De Boer told De Telegraaf. "You noticed on day one - the friendly against Italy which Netherlands lost 2-0 - it was not working.

"I am especially sorry for Guus. I have great respect for him based on his past achievements. But you have to know when to stop and Hiddink clearly did not.

"Koeman was the right man. And it was not that he did not want the job. He really wanted it."

Danny Blind has reportedly taken charge of the side in the wake of Hiddink's exit.
