Marek Hamsik: 'I turned down AC Milan'

Napoli playmaker Marek Hamsik has revealed that he turned down a move to AC Milan two seasons ago.

The Slovakian has become an integral part of Walter Mazzarri's side in recent campaigns, creating a formidable partnership with striker Edinson Cavani.

Hamsik has admitted that Mazzarri had to convince him to turn down Milan in 2011 but is more than happy with his decision to stay in Naples.

He told Guerin Sportivo: "I spoke with president Aurelio de Laurentiis and then with Mazzarri. Both of them explained to me why the club did not want to sell me.

"According to them, it would have been a mistake to join Milan. That has been invaluable advice. I am happy in Naples. The people love me and the fans appreciate me for what I am.

"The coach is our secret weapon here. If, in these last few years, we have obtained some extraordinary results, it is thanks to Mazzarri. He makes everyone feel important."

The 25-year-old has scored 10 goals for Napoli this season to help the Azzurri achieve their highest Serie A finish since 1990.
