Middlesbrough confirm Garry Monk appointment

Middlesbrough confirm the appointment of Garry Monk as their new manager.

Middlesbrough have confirmed the appointment of Garry Monk as their new manager.

Since it became apparent that Steve Agnew would not be kept on as first-team boss, both Monk and former Boro defender Nigel Pearson were said to be in the running for the role in the dugout at the Riverside Stadium.

However, on Friday, it was reported that Monk had been offered the job in the North-East and Middlesbrough have now moved to officially announce the arrival of the former Leeds United man.

At one stage, Monk had been expected to remain at Elland Road with the club having the option of extending his contract, but after talks with their board he handed in his resignation.

The 38-year-old arrives with Boro needing to regroup after a disappointing campaign in the Premier League, but there will be optimism that he can earn the team an immediate return to the top flight.

While Monk missed out on the playoffs with Leeds, he won 25 of his 53 games in charge.
